so we all run to be in shape, gawk at men/women, endorphins... etc.
when was the last time you had to run somewhere for a reason?
tonight we arrived for my g/fs youth group to find out we were a car short... i had to hoof it 2.5 km back to my house to grab the extra vehicle.
post a story about when you actually had to put your running to use.

A few years ago when I used to commute to school, I once missed the bus that usually goes by near my house. I needed to take the bus down to the terminus (from there I take a train to downtown Vancouver), which was about 2.5-3 miles away from home (I live up on a hill). I still had 25 to 30 mins to spare (the bus comes every 1/2 hr) and if I missed the train (which comes in around that time), I would be very late for class. It takes about 1 1/2 hr's commute from home to school.
So what I did was simply to run down from the bus stop, down the hill, to the terminus and the train station with my street clothes and backpack laden with books and stationery. Although it was in the sometime in the fall or winter, I was drenched in sweat when I reached the station...A couple of people gave me a few funny looks... And the best thing was that I made it just in time for the train (by a few minutes!)

I think I was 11 years old and was caught nicking a Mars Bar from Ray Dannocks' shop.
With Ray in hot pursuit I don't think I've ever ran a faster 200m.before making my escape across the Koonung Creek loosing the Mars Bar in the process.
Ray was a retired Bantamweight and a part time trainer at a local gym.
3 years later in 'friendly' sparring sessions Ray would always remind of the Mars Bar incident.
Crime does not pay!!!

I use running quite often, actually. It may not be a sprint, but I appreciate being able to jog to catch up to someone and not be out of breath, or kick it to cross the street without making cars slow. I can't remember the last time I did any sort of distance run for a practical reason though.

I have had to run to work before cuz we were short a vehicle for some reason or other. But I find myself generally running period instead of walking. Like when I go to the store. I get outta the car and run through the parking lot to the store and the same when I come back out. Please tell me you do this too?

From work to the train station (D/T Chicago) on 9/11. Then from the train station in Deerfield home - LC was in the western 'burbs at her Master's courses, and we only had one car that day.
P.S. to .jrjo - I usually run from Shelf-Mart. Screaming. Every chance I get.

one time, at the beach, we took a long walk, so about 45 minutes into the walk, my friend is hit with an "emergency," runs into the dunes and lets it rip. He ended up a bit messy. I had to run back to the hotel, get the car and drive back to pick him up. Meanwhile, he had managed to clean up a little in the ocean.
I'm not allowed to talk about this episode, so if any of you tell him, I'll have to kill you.

The last time was back when my wife was about 8 months pregnant. She wanted to go for a walk, so we headed out to a pond in our neighborhood. It was only about a 1-2km walk, but just starting back, she had a pain in the side. A few more steps and it got worse. I was able to get her to a bus stop with a bench, then I ran as fast as I could back home to get the car.
Turned out she was okay - just a touchy nerve or something. Mom and baby were fine, but we were rather concerned at the time.
On a positive note, I think I pulled a 4min km that day....
