4. Most marathoners fail to use sports drinks properly during the race. Consuming sports drinks shouldn't be "saved" for late stages of the race, when significant fatigue is beginning to set in. At that point, sports-drink consumption actually has little effect on performance, since the carbohydrate in the beverage must make its way past the stomach, into the small intestine, across the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, and through the blood to the muscles, all of which take a lot of time (in fact, so much time that the runner may be across the finish line before the first drops of carbs actually reach the sinews).

The most-important quaffing of sports drink actually takes place 10 minutes before the race begins, when eight to 10 ounces should be consumed. After that, five to six ounces should be imbibed every two miles or so during the race. Incidentally, one ounce is considered to be a normal, regular swallow of fluid. Don't forget to utilize this sports-drink-intake pattern during your long training runs, too

so six swallows people. And it looks like we need to grab 2 cups.

I haven't run any. But generally speaking I always take 2 cups. I didn't mean to imply that I had run any, sorry.

In my one and only marathon attempt I failed miserably in this respect. Lesson learned.

I agree that waiting until you are tired is waiting too long. I've done it both ways and will always get drinks & food early now.

Regarding drinking 10mins before, I've never thought of that.

Crud. Now I'm excited for the next time I can eat a cheeseburger during a race. Sad

is that still the drink of choice for Grandma's. That stuff is nasty!! However, I think for people that have sensitive stomachs it's probably better than gatorade, powerade. Now if they could take out the battery acid taste.....

Too bad marathons don't offer Cytomax. It is the drink of champions and it tastes great. It is what the most physiologists would recommend and it was recommended to me, but I can't see training with something that isn't going to be available to me.

I've noticed that there are two types of tables missing:
    The Red Bull table
    The beer table.

There's more than enough road to place these tables on. Sheesh! What are these race organizers thinking?!?

No drinkable yogurt? Neutral

I've been using Kool-Aid lately (for reals). The only real down side is that it leaves red stains on the floor of the garage if I miss my mouth.
