Posted: 09/14/04 - 11:18 Post subject: heard at IM Wisconsin yesterday
a young lady to a few young men next to me:
"these people train everyday, all year to do this. If they aren't losing weight why should I bother".
I think this was in response to a young woman that was a little big that had run by and had a big group cheering for her.
My thoughts when I saw the same girl. "I bet she has a big group cheering because she was extremely overweight and one day stood up and said 'I'm doing an ironman!' and she probably inspired alot of people along the way.
"why bother?".......two words that should never be put together!

I still occasionally overhear comments like that about me. They don't know how big I was, nor do I feel the need to enlighten them. Makes it that much sweeter when I fly past them during the race.

Well said.
I *try* (doesn't always happen) not to make assumptions about people I see in running in races/at the park/the gym/etc. You really don't know where these people are coming from or what they are going through.

To my mind, anyone out there running, riding or even walking deserves way more respect than the dude on the couch stuffing his face with Cheetos, regardless of size, age, or racing speed.
Why bother indeed......hmmmph.

Lucy found a belt in the closet from my fat days. The inscription on the inside read 40. You could see on the belt where I was using the outer most hole then the spots moved in toward the inner most hole.
Why bother?
People are clueless, especially when they are standing on the sidelines.
At least they were there to cheer someone on.

The better question would be "Why NOT bother?"

Because its sooooo great to tell people:
I have the same waist I had on my wedding day 27 years ago. In fact, I can wear my Army Dress Blue uniform that I purchased on 1970.
I went from a size 42 pants to size 34 -35
I got rid of my fat clothes a few months ago.

Fat, thin, it doesn't matter. The only thing that does is who gets across the finish line the fastest.

Sorry but what really matters is:
I'm running and you're not
Andy's formula for meeting race goals:
1. Finish
2. Not be last

Really just signing up, putting in those months of training and stepping up to the starting line really is a major accomplishment.
