Good.

Not because of injury, but because she is out.

FB: Kwan thought she was going to be healthy enough by the time the Olympics rolled around, but re-injured herself.

But kind of like track, I feel that you need to earn your way in on the day of the trials/championships. Kwan may be one of the best American skaters ever, but she wasn't able to skate the day of the trials and so she doesn't deserve to be there based on past experience alone. Just like track, a world record holder and past champion doesn't get to go if they are unable to perform the day of the trials (else Marion Jones would have made the olympics for more than just the long jump in 04)

Greed.

She had two previous shots for a gold medal. Whether through her own shortcomings or the factor others skated better that day, she didn't get it. The fact she made all the cliched "it doesn't matter how I did", "I gace it my best", etc., doesn't wash. To her credit, she did withdraw to enable Emily Hughes to have her opportunity. But had she stayed in knowing she couldn't have done it would have given her Olympic "career" a black mark.

I agree with you, I'm glad to see Emily Hughes get a shot because she earned it. I am just sad she's missed this much of her Olympic experience so far. And I hope she does great.

Michelle Kwan is a has-been. Isn't this her third olympics? And I'm sorry to say, that in figure skating her time is up. That's the nature of the sport unfortunately. Time for the young chickies to get a shot.

That's too bad. I've always admired her style of skating and grace. Figure skating is HARD physically and geared to a younger breed of athlete, but look at legends like Katarina Witt. She was skating competively and doing well at it into her early 30's.

I think it depends a lot on luck as well as your ability. Look at what happened to Oksana Baiul. SHe had so much potential at an early age, but the pressure and overnight fame and perks that come with it apparently cracked her. It's such a fickle sport (and it is a sport; I used to figure skate when I was younger but wasn't of this talent level, obviously) and it is HARD work, plus lot of politics once you get to judging at even a regional level. The potential for injury is high. Maybe the combination of the injury and stress just proved too much?

Well, let's see what the newcomer will bring to the team. Regardless of views on skating as a sport, it's beautiful to watch, and even more so if you understand the training and practice that are involved.

I agree. I think it was a crock of crap she made the team.

Off topic but.... I don't remember his name but one of the guys on a China team ruptured his achilles previously and has been re-habbing like mad to get ready for the olympics. His recovery was remarkable. They showed his surgery scar.

How old was Katerina Witt in her last Olympics? She won gold three times, didn't she? Or was it only twice?

I do agree that Kwan shouldn't have been given an Olympic spot.

Nancy Kerrigan got on the team the same way Kwan did. Kerrigan actually bumped Kwan due to her petition.

I do agree with Pug and rob about Kwan. I wish Emily could have gone to the opening ceremonies and I hope the blizzard doesn't affect her travel too much. SHe needs plenty of time to acclimate herself to the time change.
