Posted: 09/08/07 - 08:04 Post subject: Update on Indy Classic Marathon
The manager of special events for the City of Indianapolis said she is "cautiously optimistic" about organizers of the first Indy Classic Marathon being able to meet deadlines set Tuesday to prove they can put on the Nov. 3 race.
"It sounds like they're getting it together," DeAnn Milliken said after a meeting of the city's Events Advisory Board. "But things have been rocky from the beginning."
The postponement of the race, originally scheduled for Saturday, was announced Aug. 20 after the city had concerns about adequate police and medical personnel on duty.
Marathon experts said such a late postponement is highly unusual.
A recent e-mail from the Indy Classic Marathon to participants claimed 14,000 runners were entered in the marathon, half-marathon and 5K.
Milliken couldn't verify the number, saying she has to "go with what they tell me."
On Tuesday, the Events Advisory Board said it would hear from marathon organizers Sept. 25 on issues such as the number of doctors, off-duty police officers and water stations.
The next full meeting of the board, which includes police and medical personnel, is Oct. 2. That was described as the "drop dead" date by which all issues should be resolved.
"We're not messing around here," said J. Stewart Goodwin, a board member and executive director of the Indiana Air National Guard. "We need to know where they are with this.
"When we go into that meeting, there shouldn't be issues. If there are, they should be minor, and they should be things we can fix relatively quickly. But running this down to the last minute -- like they like to do -- isn't what we want."
Nobody from the marathon attended the board meeting. Race spokesman Brian Meyers said the event "is going to go on, and it's going to be stronger."
He said anyone who asks for a refund of the entry fee will receive it in seven to 14 days. Meyers said 56 refunds have been issued.
The cost was $90 for the marathon, $45 for the half-marathon and $30 for the 5K.
