Winter had returned to Wisconsin for this race. It was 30°F with a NW wind blowing about 10-20mph. Lucky for me that most of this course was West and east. This was my first race longer than 5 miles. I wasn't real sure how to run such a different distance. I figured I would run the first 7 miles or so just a little faster than training pace and then running the last 10k at a faster pace. The only problem for this was that the mile markers were not very consistent, I ran some miles at a sub 8 pace and others 12 plus , this made things a little more difficult to pace myself. I got to the turn around point at almost an hour flat. At this point I started to pick people to pass, this worked pretty good for me as I now had little short term goals and I wasn't concentrating on the pain in my feet from the blisters that had formed. When all was said and done I pasted quite a few people on the 2nd half and wasn't passed very often by others. My finish time was 1:49:22, I placed 127 out of ~300 and was 20th in my age group.
Thanks to Shelee, Runswithscissors and EL for coming out and seeing me off!

Great job Paul! I know your goal was 1:45, but considering the conditions and your feet, not bad at all! Congratulations, my friend.

What a great time, rooting RB on and seeing EL and Randy! Being a spectator at the event was really interesting. I watched the 5K race. For one thing, I realized I'm not alone during a 5K thinking that I must be nuts for running that race. Similarly the racers in last place to the racers in first place and all the runners inbetween pretty much look like they're going to die, with a few exceptions of those who decide to walk. So, I guess I'm in good company out there when I feel like my heart is exploding during that race. Also, it was great to see the racers encourage each other during the event. What other sport do you actually witness compeitors encouraging each other??? Very entertaining.
RB's race: I only got t to see the runners cross the finish line...which was exciting. Both the 1/2 and full marathoners crossed the same finish line. One could really destinguish the marathoners from the half marathoners by the expression of pain on their faces! Anyway, RB crossed looking good and, even better, with a great finish time, especially considering the weather. It was cold, windy, and snowy. There were like 2 of us clapping the runners on at the end. The rest of the friends and family wimped out and were indoors. LOL! Anyway, congrats, Paul, you did a great job and it was a good time being included in your first half! One of these races, I'll be racing it right along with you...for like the first mile anyway.
