Posted: 10/15/09 - 18:35 Post subject: The Screaming Pumpkin Marathon & Relay 10/30
Wanted to share the news about a brand new Illinois Marathon!
http://www.screamingpumpkinrace.com/
The Marathon and Relay: Come take part in PATFC's inaugural Screaming Pumpkin Prediction Marathon and Relay held on Halloween Eve, where running fast won't necessarily win you the race! The Screaming Pumpkin event promises to be one of the hilliest and darkest running events in the country. Run by yourself, or with a team of 2 or 4. Either way, you'll have no watch and no clock on the course: Just you, the cemetery and the night sky. Whoever finishes closest to midnight without going over, wins the race. Participants can begin running anytime after 5:00 PM on October 30th, depending on the length of time they predict it will take them to complete the 26.2 mile distance before, or ideally, ON the stroke of midnight. Finishers who make it back before midnight, will receive a wand, a tiara and a finisher's photo. Finishers who make it back after midnight will receive a pumpkin. The marathon course will close and all runners will be asked to leave the course at 1:00 AM. **Marathon and relay runners are guaranteed a long sleeve technical shirt and an orange Puma, fleece lined, dri-fit beanie cap.
5K Run and 2 Mile Walk: Not up to the 26.2 mile distance? The 5K run and 2 mile walk will begin at the lower entrance to Glen Oak Park, and will follow the trail into historic Springdale Cemetery. The course will be run on mostly flat, paved roads and trails, and will finish down hill, back at the park entrance. The 5k will begin at 6:00 PM and the 2 mile walk will begin shortly afterward. **5K and walkers will receive long-sleeve cotton shirts up to the first 125 registrants.
TIME & LOCATION The race will be held in lower Glen Oak Park across from Woodruff High School. Parking across the street at Woodruff High School.
Marathon: The marathon will be held on Friday, October 30th. Participants choose their own starting time based on the predicted pace with a finish time goal of 12 Midnight. Participants may begin running as early as 5:00. All participants must sign in with a Race Start Official before they begin running.
5K Run and 2 Mile Walk: The 5K race will start promptly at 6:00. The 2 mile walk will start shortly thereafter.
THE COURSE The Marathon & Relay: The Screaming Pumpkin Marathon course consists of 4 hilly, beautiful (in the light of day) 6.55 mile loops through historic Springdale Cemetery and Glen Oak Park. In fact, this marathon course may be the hilliest you've ever attempted. But that's alright because your time on this race does not matter! Slow runners and even run/walkers have a chance of winning on this challenging course because all that matters is whether or not you finish closest to midnight without going over! The majority of the race will be on paved streets and paths. One section will follow along a wooded trail. There will be no traffic on the course. Founded in 1854, Springdale is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in the state. Over 78,000 citizens are buried along the 230 acres of hills and valleys and 6.5 miles of roads.
5K & 2 Mile Walk: The 5K run and 2 mile walk will begin at the lower entrance to Glen Oak Park, and will follow the trail into historic Springdale Cemetery. The course will be run on mostly flat, paved roads and trails, and will finish down hill, back at the park entrance.
