Five-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ian Thorpe showed "abnormal levels" of two banned substances in a doping test last year, the French sports daily L'Equipe reported on its Web site Friday.

Anti-doping officials in Australia threw out the case for lack of scientific proof, but the sport's governing body FINA wants the investigation reopened, the paper said.

Thorpe retired in November at age 24. He did not compete in another major international meet after the 2004 Olympics.

L'Equipe said Thorpe turned up irregular levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone in a test on May 2006.

Yeah, you're right. I remember that.

Maybe it's just their jealousy. Smile

Ian Thorpe cleared of doping allegations
Friday Aug 31 14:00 AEST
Retired Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe has been cleared of doping allegations, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority said.

Thorpe returned abnormal levels of testosterone in a urine sample he gave in May 2006.

But ASADA today cleared him of all wrongdoing.

"The evidence available does not indicate the use of performance enhancing substances by Mr Thorpe," ASADA said in a statement.

"He has no case to answer."

Thorpe, who is Australia's greatest Olympian, winning five Olympic gold medals and 11 world titles before announcing his retirement last November, said he was relieved to have cleared his name.

"My reputation as a fair competitor in swimming is the thing I value most," he said in a statement.

"I have been deeply touched by all the messages I've received from Australians and people all over the world who let me know they believed in me.

"I have always been, and remain, a strong supporter of anti-doping testing. I firmly believe drugs have no place in sport.

"I took my obligations to comply with the anti-doping codes very seriously and prided myself on this."
