Posted: 08/10/06 - 20:09 Post subject: Spinoff benefits of hosting a Championship game...
my fair city is hosting the Grey Cup this year. (that's the CFL trophy).
our stadium is a block away from where i work - and yesterday the chief lady of one of the planning teams dropped off information asking us if we'd be ok with a street closure. i said "probably wouldn't be a problem, but the boss has the final say".
and then i realized which street she actually meant.
they want to close off the MAIN artery to the store. traffic is bad as it is - if this one street is closed, that will be a whole lot of our business (we're in a fairly large power center).
the closure will be from thursday evening, all day friday, saturday, and sunday til whenever it all gets taken down.
THREE friggin full days. we just as soon would close the store instead.
we're trying to figure out how we can salavage this - being one of three stores in the area that would be selling CFL gear... but no one is going to be walking to our store from the mall on Nov 24th when it's -20 out.
they need x number of signatures to do the closure - our DM says they'll probably get them.
this blows.

Have fun hosting the championship of the Boy's Department of the NFL.
(110-yard field?! - no wonder we had to bail you all out in Vietnam! )

How is it the shop's decision? Wouldn't that be up to the city to close a city street? Sounds like the "chief lady" is barking up the wrong trees.

Sounds to me like they want to convert that entire area into a big pedestrian mall. Your best bet is to bite the bullet and... have a big azzed blow out sale of all the crapola you can't get rid of any other time.
On the plus side:
You'll have lots of pedestrian traffic there, problably some exibitions fan games and what not. Your CFL Stuff would sell at a premium.

i think they need to check with the stores because it's not like it's construction that's necessary. either way, i don't think it'll matter because i can't seem them not closing the street down.

it's the winter man, people aren't going to be walking store to store. and the only thing that will sell before the game is extra winter clothing and the CFL gear (and no, we can't raise the prices).
so yeah, the best we're going to do is bring in a pile of the proper CFL gear and hope it sells like mad. we'll do some creative thinking and make the best of it.. but that's kinda lame.
