Today is one of those days. I'm leaving early to go to our second wake in three days. This one is for our pastor's son. He was in his early/mid-twenties, and was battling a leukemia-sort of thing for several years (LC will correct me if I'm wrong on the condition). They tried everything conventional and experimental, and tried with no success to set up a bone marrow transplant. All to no avail.
Jarrod leaves his wife and a two-year old son.
The one thing I noticed with going to "open casket" wakes is that if the deceased died too soon (we all die too soon, but you know where I'm going on this one), what they look like in the casket is nothing like we remember in real life. People who die at an old age do. I've never figured that one out.
Three deaths in six days is not fun. Even when it's people you don't know all that well.

That sucks, especially when it is someone so young.

i don't do that "open viewing" thing well at all, even at my age.
honestly, i've been blessed in that i've never had to be there in remembrance of a young person; i'd find that overwhelming and most likely would be of no support whatsoever to the family. i'd crumble.
i'm sorry you're dealing with these losses g. when it rains, it pours.
my prayers are with his family.

Wow that's really sad, I'm so sorry. I don't do the open casket thing well either. Does anybody really? And they always say "oh he looks really good." And I'm always thinkin' BS he's dead he looks like crap. Looking good and dead are not to be used in the same sentence. Very tough, again, so sorry.

I used to think this too, until my MIL passed away. It was ugly, trust me. Totally un-f'ing believeable. She really looked good, cause if they'd have put her out there looking like she did the day she died, everyone else would be having nightmares too.
Sorry G. Last year was a parade of funerals for us too. And it sucks. I was a little weirded out last year when I attended a funeral on one day, and a baby shower the next. The circle of life keeps on a spinning.

Thanks to all, and especially for the prayers for the family. They've set up two trusts - one for Hayden (the boy) and his college education, and the other for the medical expenses.
The latter I don't get either. I always figured, if you go into the hospital, and you can't be saved, the family shouldn't get stuck with a bill. In these cases, I know - years of treatments, exams, therapy, etc., that have to be paid. But something like you get a in car accident - billing the family for that when they (the hospital) don't/can't do what they're paid to do just strikes me as tres hinky. And wrong.

That's awful Gdawg. I'm sorry.
We had a pilot die this week--his service was the same day we got some really good news--and it felt wrong to celebrate.

Death is just awful, no matter the case.
Today we found out the mother of a 5 year old in my daughter's hip hop class killed herself 2 weeks ago.

This answers the question: Why is finding a cure for leukemia so damned important?
I know it's a helpless feeling, watching from the outside.

When we made the visitation Sunday night, his wife was taking it better than his parents (the pastor and his wife). She (Amy, his wife) was able to joke a little bit - maybe a little out of relief it was all done, maybe a little as a release (of the stress) mechanism. And every so often, she would take a look over to the casket, just sort of to make sure Jarrod was OK.
He is.
