Sending your husband good thoughts for tomorrow. I guess I misunderstood (and there's been some confusion on here about this). So your husband had piriformis surgery, but Dr. Filler did not remove the piriformis? Let us know how things go and best of luck to your husband. Hopefully his ordeal will be over in less than 24 hours!

Dr Filler did surgery back in June. Here is what Dr Filler said he did (cutting the piriformis muscle to releave the nerve and the nerve to the obturaton internus through a neuroplasty) SO I dont think he removed the muscel. He said its in a ball now and he needs to go in and fix. I will find out the details and post later.

I know you posted this a few months again. Have you had any releaf? I feel bad for you my husband also had surgery for piriformis and the pain did go away but come back 3to 4 months later. He had surgery AGAIN with Dr Filler(wonderful doctor) he said the scar tissue pulled so tight it made his muscle rupcher. HE WAS IN SO MUCH PAIN. I feel so bad for you and hope you can find away to get some releif.

I am not doing good. Bairly able to walk at all but get around some. Still working everyday but am doing so only because I have to and feel like I want to die all day long.
I know and can feel that I am depressed but cannot do anything about it. Fell like I have been fefeated in this whole thing.
I have an apt with my origional neurologist next fri to review everything. I cannot mentally go back to square one with this and would end up having a nervous break down. I want to discuss with him cauterizing or cutting the sciatic nerve to rid me of all the pain.
I have 0 life now. I suffer threw work, come home and get into bed and usually cry myself to sleep only to wake up each time I attempt to move in my sleep. Obviously I am not getting enough rest but nothing I can do about it.
The meds that the pain MD gave to me is like eating candy - doing nothing for me but will continue to take them until I see the other MD.
No going back to Bohlman since when I did see him all he could say it that I should not be in pain and only looked at the area threw my sweat pants to see the swelling and said that it must not have been the piriformis that was causing my problems since it not their anymore and refered me to the pain MD.
Sorry this is so negative but hard to be positive right now with anything and wanted you all to know what is going on with me.
Hope eveyone's W/E goes better then mine (stuck in bed with a heating pad) |

Tafoya, I still don't understand how Dr. Bohlman could just drop you and say that you must not have had piriformis syndrome. Have you had anyone explain that swelling you had? Have you seen other surgeons or a physiatrists. Do you have any understanding what the problem is if it is not piriformis. Or was it piriformis and Dr. Bohlman's surgery didn't work or caused some other problem? I am so sorry what you are having to go through. It doesn't seem fair.
Wondering how your husband's surgery went LSheppar. I hope Dr. Filler got everthing fixed.
I talked to Dr. Filler on Friday. I am a little over a year post surgery and he is still following me. We agreed that I am probably stuck because of the fractured foot and uneven gait. I couldn't believe that he actually talked to me about the fracture, asked about whether I had osteoperosis, asked if I was on clacium, etc. He made a suggestion about a med that is better than fosamax or actinel for building bones. I was really impressed that he took the time to talk to me about something that had nothing to do with his surgery but could benefit me.
I asked him once again about whether he removes the piriformis and maybe this is the answer that is the real one. He said in my case, he removed the piriformis but he doesn't do that in every case. He said I should just have a stump left. I shoud have asked what determine his decision to remove or not remove. I know he also removed Hawaii Girl's muscle.(Lynne) She wrote him and asked him and he wrote back the next day.
Even though I have been aggravated by this fracture problem, I still think that there are indications that I am slowly getting better. He agrees. He wants me to make another telephone appointment in about 2-3 months. I was surprised that he is willing to continue following me. He said that if I reach a plateau he would lsuggest an injection that he has had some success with that helps the nerves heal rather than a 2nd surgery..
Hi to Nick, Menzie, Jo, Judy, Jen. Glad you are posting again Jo. Good to hear from you Judy. Thanks for the suggestions.
Wonder how Brandon is. If you are still reading the posts, wish you would let us know Brandon. Jen . hope your injection is still working.
OK, gotta go. I will keep you posted once I get this thing off my fracture. The fracture clinic still has not called. It makes me mad. Oh well.

Shirley, All of my husbands nerve pain is gone. He had his 2nd surgery on Thursday so we are 4-days out. He is very sore from the surgery he said maybe alittle more sore this time than last time. Last time right after surgery he said his leg was tingling. I will have his ask Dr Filler why he didnt remove his piriformis muscle. I am glad you got to talk with Dr Filler he really is great man.

So good to hear that your husband's pain is gone. And good to hear that there are success stories at there and that Dr. Filler does spend time to listen and help. I think he's just never eager to talk to me just because he screwed up and there's not much that can be done about it.
The new pain med is beginning to have less control over the pain. It's worrying me. I'm trying to find out about wydase injections and cortisone from a place I can afford. Did your husband have another surgery or was it injections? What was done this time? Thanks for the info!

LSheppar, really great that your lhusband is nerve pain free.Hope his recovery continues to go well. He is brave to have had 2 surgeries within such a short period.
Nick, really sorry that your pain meds aren't working so well anymore. You have had such a hard time. I understand why you are more cautious about Dr. Filler. There have been 2 of you on the forum who were worse after surgery. Ronessa was the other one.
I am still not sure that I will be a lot better. Yesterday I overdid it and am paying a hugh price today. I continue to have nerve pain and actually don't remember a day without it either before or after surgery so when I hear someone is immediately better, it is amazing. That is what happened with Donna. With me it is just a matter of how bad the nerve pain is from day to day. But I was doing more before this fracture with less nerve pain. So for that reason I continue to feel optimistic. Also I am not very good about not doing the things that I know aggravate me. You would think I had learned. by now.Oh well .
Keep us posted, LSheppar, on your husband's progress.
Bye for now.
Shirley

Posted: 10/20/09 - 13:11 Post subject: 2 years!!
Hi everyone
I've been reading through some of the recent posts and it sounds like there are still a lot of challenges out there.
I have just past the two year mark since surgery and I am still so very glad that I had it done!!!!! With the surgery and the occasional RF treatment for SI pain, I am almost pain free. I am still dealing with the myofascial pain, but I think we have it under control for now. I know that life will never be the same as before I started dealing with pain, since "almost pain free" implies that every day I feel something, usually no more than level 1 or 2, and I do have to think about what I do. But, surgery really gave me my life back and I am eternally grateful that I had it done.
As I read some of your comments, I wonder why my surgery was such an immediate success and others of you have struggled so much post surgery and have even had to go back for a second surgery. I just want to encourage you to hang in there
Donna

This is my husbands 2nd surgey with Dr Filler. The injections only lasted 3 days. Here is what Dr Filler said his surgical instructions was for the 2nd surgery" right transgluteal approach for possible muscle repair, neuroplasty sciatic and obturator internus nerves surgical procedure for pirformis syndrome" I am wanting for his surgery report. He said the scar tissue was so tight is caused the muscle to bust open. He also said it was a mess when he opened him up. What went wrong with your surgery? I am sorry to hear it went bad. I will post his report.

Ouch. that sounds awful. But at least he's better now. My surgery (2 incisions) didn't really fix anything, but during the procedure Dr. Filler slashed or injured in some way a major sensory nerve. My thigh (from back of knee to the butt crease) is totally numb in the surface, and also has this constant burning sensation right under the skin. It's been over six months with no improvement so far, so 99% chance it will remain that way. The numbness is not a big issue, but the burning is, and it's become as major a problem as the original piriformis pain.

Judy, the drug is called subutex. It's been FDA approved in the US for detox purposes, but has been used to treat pain in Europe for 10 years. It's definitely made a huge difference in my pain management.
