Any of you fellas get notions like that? Apparently they have tryouts at a certain place every year. Next year he and a fella we play softball with are going to go try out. I'm not exactly hip on the idea but I told him to go ahead if he really wanted to. I'm hoping by next year he will decide it really isn't in our best interest. Is he having an early mid-life crisis? He's 30 and hasn't played football since highschool.

Do they wear pads or is this touch/flag football?

Cool! If he makes it that would be really cool. No harm in trying.
I am 32 and have thought about getting back into Judo. I might be a little too fragile in my old age, though.

My advice would be to let him try out but most if not all of those guys playing even a low level football like the arena league where pretty good college football athletes. I doubt there are very many in any of the professional leagues that didn't play college ball.

I'm not sure. I guess they wear pads and tackle.

That's what I was hoping. He's already had ACL surgery on his knee in HS. He's hurt it a few times playing softball to where he gimped around for a few weeks. I hate to see him get hurt.

Cool! But he's going to be supa-sore from doing that. Does he have good insurance?

A couple of my good friends from high school played arena league. Yep, full pads and everything. Full contact, just like real football, just a smaller field, and all turf, which sucks. Your possibility for injury skyrockets. The team that used to be in Madison disbanded. I think one of them is playing somewhere else now. There really isn't any money in it. Some that are good enough (Kurt Warner, for example) hope to be seen by the NFL. I guess if he is big enough, there's no harm in trying. More harm if he makes it!

From what he told me it would be like a full time job. Don't know what it pays. I don't know much about it and neither does he.

So this wouldn't be like a side job? Tell him you want to be a rock star and see what he says.

As I said before, the pay is HORRIBLE and both of my friends had full time jobs besides. One of them was the team's star receiver, and he was still working full time on the side. Unless you feel like carrying both of you, it's not looking good.

Things could be worse...
He could want to get into some eXtreme sports, like paragliding or rock climbing, or bleach his hair white, etc.
I say, let him do it.

Please do. I'll need someone to hand me the kleenex. I'm not answering the shape one for fear of incriminating myself.
