Posted: 01/24/05 - 13:58 Post subject: Music while running??
Hi there! I've been running short distances and really enjoy listening to music while I do it. Would it be possible to listen to music during a race? Is it usually allowed? Does anyone use a music system that works better than others while running and the music lasts a long time??
THANKS! for any help you can offer!!

Usually the race director will say whether or not they're going to allow headphones at an event. It will vary from race to race.
MP3 players are your best bet because they don't skip like CD players do and they're much cheaper than an iPod.
A 128MB MP3 player will hold about 2 hrs. of music, while a 256MB MP3 player will hold around 4 hrs.
I've got an RCA Lyra with 128MB and it's held up for almost 2 years without problem, and I've even run in the rain with it before.

Some MP3s (one of the Rio products) are tiny and still have an fm receiver.
When I ran on sidewalks, I used the split headphones and only used one so I could still hear what was going on around me.
On our base, it is illegal to use headphones to run anywhere except the duckpond, track or gym.
I have an old school Rio and it ROCKS!!! Easy to use, fun to use.

I love running with my music inside and out. I have ran races with it too if I'm not racing with a friend.

i always train with music on the treadmill. i don't think i'd make it a mile without the MP3. i have a new Rio forge and, despite some reported widespread problems with that player, mine has been fine.
i never race 5Ks with music; i'd just rather hear my breathing and the other runners around me.
i have tried running a 15K with the music, but it died in the first mile and i though i'd be lost without it. it really wasn't that bad and was probably better for my concentration in that long run.
my view is that inside training, music is a must. outside, if i am in a park it is ok. no music in traffic at all.
welcome

I ran the Phila. Marathon with headphones. The next year they weren't allowed. Running with the music was inspiring. If there is a next time, I'll just have to find my inspiration in something else.

While I publicly support following the rules of the race director, I take headphones no matter what they say. Sometimes i just need the beat of a song to help me through.

I personally use a mp3 player, 1GB, made by Creative. It's tiny and also has FM stereo.
Here's a picture of it:
mine came with those cheap ear buds which I replaced with those wrap around ones that go on each ear. It comes with a wrap around velcro armband holder that you can strap on to your arm but I just use the clip and attach it to the back of my waist.

BTW: I listen to U.S. Marine Corps. Running Cadence. I LOVE it..not a Marine but it makes me inspiration to run and sets a good tempo for me to follow.

 | That's the one I use. Buds don't work with my ears, so I just use the traditional Walkman-type of cans.
The Retriever's rule of thumb on this'n (why not - no one else has ever thrown this one out): The longer the race distance, the less likely you'll be allowed to wear music.

Well i find music is fun while u train only, it makes time go faster a lot quicker. But i never use it for a race. I find that the beat of a song screws up ur breathing pattern and possibly have craps or run out of energy faster. But thats just me
