Is this really true? How do you guys feel? I thought men didn't notice/care about male models.
| Quote: | May 7, 2004 -- Commercials featuring topless models with buff bodies and unattainable physiques may make the viewers feel depressed and unhappy with their bodies.
Sound familiar? It is, but this time it's the men's turn to feel insecure.
Researchers say many studies have shown how images of beautiful, Barbie-like models negatively affect women's self-esteem, but this study is among the first to look at how a "culture of muscularity" may affect men's self-esteem.
In the study, researchers found that watching TV images of muscular, shirtless men lifting weights and selling cologne and deodorant left men feeling depressed and unhappy with their own muscles.
Researchers say those feelings may make men more likely to engage in dangerous behaviors, such as using steroids or exercising excessively.
"The level of muscularity and attractiveness that are idealized in the media often are not attainable for the average man," says researcher Stacey Tantleff-Dunn, professor of psychology at the University of Central Florida. "Men see more of a discrepancy between how they want to look, or think they need to look, and the image they see in the mirror. Such discrepancies can cause the dissatisfaction and low self-esteem that lead to extreme and often unhealthy actions, such as eating disorders, exercising too much, and steroid abuse." |

It does not bother me at all.
If anything, it gives me a goal to work towards. I know at almost 50, that I probably will not have a "model" body, but I can try to get as close as I can.
I am also a weight lifter, so I tend to be a little thicker than the model types.
I consider it a responsibilty to keep myself in as good a shape as possible for my SO. I would want her to be proud of the man she is seen with.
The only time when it would be depressing, is if your too lazy to get off your butt and do something about the shape your in....but then you would have no one to blame, but yourself. Of course this would exclude medical conditions.

I don't think we care so much about the male models, but we are bombarded by images of these cut, muscled, men with good bodies and it has to have some sort of impact on our psyche. I know i don't look like that, and while i don't think i let it get me down there is at least a little bit of dissatisfaction with the way that i look.
Then again the wookie hair might have something to do with that, too.

Well, as a male model let me just say that I am deeply offended by this.
They don't bother me.
I do think sometimes, I need to get off my ass though, when seeing one of the aforementioned models.

Proper diet and exercise will go a long way.

I don't give a crap about those models. They are primped jsut as much as female ones. I love when I can see the make up. Also they shave a lot more of their body than I do.
Insecure who cares. I have much better things to do.
Plus it would be hard you know being a dude and all say, no dudes I missed the game last night, I was shaving my chest hair and practicing with my make up.

Gack, if I'm watching a show that has male models then the channel needs surfed. I don't give a rats behind what those guys look like. I'm pretty darn happy with what I got.

If i had a model's body i would not be in as good a shape as i am in now. I think i look fine enough as it is for the most part. maybe some more upper body might look better, but the arms and chest have very little to do in speed and distance skating. Miss Steph thinks i am just fine and that's the only woman's opinion i am after.
