One of my husband's lieutenants (read:21 y/o) was playing flag football with other people from the squadron when they crashed head-on trying to catch a ball.
Long story short: His eye socket was crushed and the bone severed the optic nerve. UC Davis said there was nothing they could do.
They expect him to be blind in that eye from now on.
He will probably have to get out of the military.
He is a super troop, too. Really motivated and excited about his job and career in the AF.
Man, this breaks my heart. It just downright sucks.
I hope something really good comes out of this for him somehow.

That is a shame.
If he was a pilot I could see why he would have to leave the AF, but why would he have to leave otherwise.

They still have certain vision standards which must be correctable with glasses to fall within certain parameters.
I'm hoping there is something that can be done, but right now things don't seem so hopeful.

ugh! I remember right before hubby left AF, I found myself with a corneal abrasion. They are supposed very rare, but his particular ER visit had 4 people in the waiting room for the same thing. One guy was a sharp shooter and he was frantic about being discharged. His abrasion was in his line of vision and sharp shooters were allowed to wear glasses.

Quite simply, everyone in an armed service needs to be deployable anywhere in the world. If the person was blind in one eye then he would have to remain stateside in a "safe" job and would not be a "full" assett to the USAF.
Military organization in general are also "hazardous" places to work (ie its not an office environment) the chance of this pilot hurting their other eye is possible. Now you have an unfortunate situation compounded into a tragic situation.
I hope like you do something can be done to restore the vision.

You're right - that sucks big time. I hope they can find him a "safe" job so that he doesn't have to leave the military.

This is so sad. I was telling my husband about it and he wondered if this was a sanctioned game or if they were just getting together for a fun game. Reason being - if it was sanctioned he could claim disability benefits but otherwise it sucks big time.

Sorry to hear about that. That is truly horrible.
I was thinking though, good thing that didn't happen in a school or a movement would start to ban the activity for being "unsafe".
