Posted: 04/13/03 - 12:39 Post subject: Lake Lanier Duathlon - I WON!
I WON the non-prize for tightest ham strings! I hit the massage table after the race and the massage therapist used my for show-and-tell.
Real race report (scroll down for Cliff's Notes) ::
Up and at 'em at 4:30. Couldn't sleep for poop, nerves kept me up all night. Mde a little less coffee this time and fumbled around the house packing up my goods and praying that I don't forget anything.
Drove out to the race and in addition to the race nerves, I see that my engine isn't getting hot. Great, now I've got one more thing to worry about.
Had a little trouble finding the race since I'm terrible with directions and I didn't get to go to the race expo yesterday like I wanted to. Still had plenty of time though. Got to the race almost an hr. early.
Set up my transition area and then putzed around until the race started. Lined up kind of close to the front which ended up being a newbie mistake. Found out at the starting line that the first leg was a 5K instead of just 3 miles. No biggie, but it threw off what my planned times were by just a little bit.
BANG! Off we go. I got passed quite a bit because I was holding back. Didn't want to jack rabbit this early in the race. Held a fairly easy pace through the 1st mile. Ended up being right at 6:30. Fairly hilly course, but not too bad. 2nd mile was 6:30 pace too. I was happy with that since I was just shooting for sub 7 miles. The last little .1 mi. was more like rock climbing than running. It was straight up, reeeeeally steep.
Hit the transition area and forgot what my split was. (and didn't keep track of splits from that point on) Transition was pretty smooth. The best thing I did was take by bright yellow jacket and leave it right by my bike. Made it super easy to find in the crowd. Helmet...shoes...and a I'm off on the bike.
Bike start was kind of crowded and I didn't want to get a penalty for drafting so I took it easy until things spread out again. Got stuck behind a guy on a good-sized hill and just hung there while I ended up getting passed by a few people. (I'm new to this bike racing stuff. Just newbie mistakes)
Just cruised along for the first half of the race and at about the half-way point, the screw in my cyclocomputer came loose and the cyclocomputer ended up dangling off the aerobars for the rest of the ride.
Right after the half-way point, there was a turn in the road and I looked down and saw this supah-steep downhill. POOP! I was totally unprepared for it. I just stopped pedalling and held on tight. Topped out at 42 MPH . Ended up getting passed on the uphill portion of hill by souls that were brave enough to pedal going down that hill.
Last half of the bike was uneventful. I ended up passing a few people and got passed a couple of times, but I'd say that I passed more than passed me. Average speed 20.2 MPH.
In and out of the transition area in a hurry and back out for the final run. (Plug for the QR bike) That bike is awesome for the bike/run transition. I could barely even tell that I had just gotten off the bike.
Ended up going down that hill/wall that was at the end of the 5K at the beginning. That was rough. Had to take tiny steps to keep from falling over.
The last two miles I just picked off the people that were in front of me one by one. Even people that were so far ahead of me that I was sure I wasn't going to pass I eventaully passed. Turned the corner to the finish line and kicked it in but I ended up getting passed my only time on the final run about 5 yds. from the finish. I really gutted it out with the guy that passed me but I couldn't hold him off.
Results :: 5K run - 16 mi. bike. 2 mi. run :: 1:24:25 - That's 5:35 faster than my goal time so I'm pretty happy with that. Really didn't know what I was capable since this was my first multi-sport event.
Things I could have done better :: More practice on the bike. Just didn't seem smooth all the time. Sometimes I was hammering the pedals and sometimes I was spinning. No real rhyme or reason. Need to learn how to stay down in the corners too. Had to rise out of aero and slow down to hit the corners, lost good time there. Transitions - never done them before, lots to learn. General cycling race etiquitte [sp?].
Things I happy with :: My running. I think I pace myself pretty well and maintained focus throughout. Didn't embarrass myself on the bike. I've never considered myself a good rider and was surprised by the number of people I was passing (especially on the uphills).
Cliff's Notes ::
5K run - 16 mi. bike - 2 mi. run -- 1:24:25 49th out of Last years race listed 450 participants.

Hooked is right. Can't wait for the next one. Don't have a triathlon lined up until July though.

So what is the pucker factor like going down a hill at 42 MPH? I know I would probably have a hard time breaking the suction on the seat during the transition.........

That is an awesome result .
Are your hamstrings always really tight or was it just post this race? Can you bend down and touch your toes? Maybe the therapist was a little confused with mighty-fine-muscular-no-fat-on-them-legs v tight hamstrings - I've seen that mistake made before .
