Posted: 10/15/06 - 17:36 Post subject: I FINISHED!!
Just wanted to thank all of you for your input over the last 18 weeks. I finished my first marathon although it wasnt without some surprises. During my training I really had no problems with knees at all. I trained mostly on a paved asphalt bike trail. The race was on a gravel fairly hard surface but was somewhat softer in spots due to snowfall the night prior.
I am not sure if the running surface created the problems for me or what it was but at the half way point my right knee started hurting on the outside part of my knee. My left knee started hurting at about mile 17. All of my training runs I never had this problem. I was trying to run at a 8-8:20 pace and had trouble falling into my pace. It was really tough on race day to stay consistent. I should have taken splits every mile maybe. I was doing it every three miles.
Anyway, at miles 20 to the finish I couldnt really feel my knees anymore. I was taking in liquid at every aid station thru the race. I ended up finishing with a time of 3:50:02. My ultimate goal was to finish and wanted to finish under 4 hours....so was pretty happy with the outcome.
Just wish I could have ran it without all of the pain early on. I knew the pain after mile 20 was inevitable.
Any thoughts on when and how to train post marathon?? I followed Hal Higdons Novice program for this race. If I go for another marathon next year any recommendations on what training program to follow?? Would it be better to switch to a different program?? Thanks again to many of you who helped me early on. Feels great to have one under my belt!!

congratulations
that's an excellent time for a first marathon!
sorry about the knee thing, if it was lateral pain, it could be ITB stuff. try keeping your quads really loose (using a foam roller) and stretched, hip flexors too.
great job!
