Posted: 11/02/02 - 13:26 Post subject: Humana River Crown Marathon & 1/2 Marathon race report
Hi.
Its been a while for me here writing a race report so here goes.
Juts got done running the Kansas City Humana River Crown 1/2 marathon.
The temp at the start was in the low 30's with a slight breeze, and overcast skies.
This was a training/rehab run for me as I continue to recover from some foot problems over the summer and knew my endurance base was not where I wanted it to be just yet, but needed a race to chart my progress.
This course is a tough course to run with lots of hills, downhills and several rolling hills within the first 8 miles.
Being on the committee that created this course we took like courses (Pittsburg, Cincinnati, & Omaha) and figure our course would run about 10 to 15 minutes slower with a finish time of 2:25 to 2:30 for the marathon.
Not even close..................
The course was running 20 to 25 minutes slower (the winning time in the marathon was 2:49).
So my goal was to take it easy and not race people.
The 1st 8 miles felt good but knew in training runs my body started having problems between mile 9 & 10.
Right on cue around mile 9.5 had some hip problems, and soreness in my upper right thigh.
Decided to take it easy from that point on, and told myself its a training run nothing more nothing less.
My finish time was 2:37.06.
Given the comments from others who said ther course sucked, and made their times slower than expected, felt I was off my goal time by 15 minutes.
Dealing with light freezing rain at mile 11 did not help either.
Thanks.

good job, morpheus...hilly courses are fine for training runs but can be cruel during races.
I toyed with the idea of running the marathon down there following after Twin Cities (on 9/29) but given the descriptions of the course that I've seen and heard I'm glad I decided not too.

Good job Morpheus!! What's a race in November without a little freezing rain? It is always good to have race or two that you can consider a character builder and not worry about your time. Good luck with those nagging injuries...........cjay

thanks folks the comments do help.
My recovery has gone well, with the exception of the thigh & hip pain I'm pretty much back to normal, and know the areas that need work as I prepare for Madison in the spring, with races in Texas & SC if Feb.

Keith, Good going! Glad you decided to run the halfM. Did you have to wear any "sponsor" garb?
Are you going to be on the committee for next year's race? It'll be interesting if changes are made for an easier course and moving to an earlier date.
