I'm going to start training for a triathlon!
Obviously I need to purchase a bike first. I don't have the first bit of knowledge about what bike to purchase, though. I know the amount of cash that I'll need to have but that is about all I know!
When I was in high school (many moons ago) I used to swim frequently but I think I'll probably need a refresher course on that as well. I swam 1/2 mile at the pool yesterday so it's a matter of technique and speed more than anything.
Does anyone have any newbie bike websites and/or a bike for sale they can direct me to?

for the bike start here: http://sheldonbrown.com/beginners/index.html
Tri book: get Triathlon 101
These will get you up and running.
Remember to save a money for the bike extras. Pedals, shoes, helmet, gloves, shorts, jersey, computer, bottle cages, bottles, pump, extra tubes, tire irons, multi-tool, saddle bad, mini-pump for bike, etc. Don't let it get to you take your time and visit some shops during the week if you can so they can spend some time with you. Make sure they include a good fitting. You can get reviews at http://roadbikereview.com/reviewscrx.aspx Although I like to support the LBS (local bike shop) a lot of the extras are cheaper online. check out Performancebike, nashbar, and supergo. Also Qbike.com is a search engine for bike shopping.
Have fun and keep us posted.

I like both Performance and Nashbar, and I order most of my stuff from there. I do take my bike into the LBS a few times a year for maintenance, he is the guy that sold rtpd the bike (rtpd gave it to me), he has been around for awhile, and does good quality work

I bought a new road bike in November, my first one. All I can tell you is this; I looked at and took a test ride on many different bikes. I made sure to ride the high end ones I could never afford, just to get a frame of reference. I finally rode one that just flat out spoke to me, and I bought it. I couldn't be any happier with it, or with biking.

I can't offer any more useful sites than what have been given already. Actually, I just want to offer my congrats and happy thoughts while you train for your tri.
