Posted: 07/13/03 - 23:02 Post subject: Granola Bars?
I've been eating granola bars before my morning runs. I've been eating the nature valley crunchy kind and it's okay, but I really don't like the rock hard bars. All of the chewy granola I've had is too sugared up and tastes like candy. Any suggestions?

Nature Valley makes some Trail Mix bars that are chewy but get their sweet taste from the dried fruit. I love them, and think they work well before a run (or after a run, or sitting on the couch)

I've tried the ones that Katzoo is talking about and they're pretty sweet/chewy. I don't really care for the hard granola bars either.

Try making your own granola--that way you can vary the amount of ingredients you need more of. For example, fruits or nuts or even some chocolate pieces. Plus, you can control your own sugar.
Do a google for granola recipes, if nothing comes up--pm me.
As far as I know, it is pretty easy to do, and keeps for awhile. It's a great rainy day project.

Nope. That's why I run. I'm a cook at heart. It's hard to be healthy and love to cook and I'm trying to meld the two and find a happy medium. (or small--hahaha)

The Powerbar is one of the most vile things ever invented. I have to choke them down before races and LSDs. Double .
Try Clif Bars, particularly Chocolate Brownie. They literally look like crap, but are num num nummy. Kashi cereal bars are good, too, first thing in the morning.

I love the trail mix bars, they have whole almonds in them! Yum! But also by Nature Valley are the more chewy yogurt dipped granola bars, I really like those as well. And still as cheap as the hard (but still good!) Nature Valley originals.
my pantry could be a nature valley commercial...

I finally bit the bullet and bought a box of Power bars... oatmeal raisin flavor... my favorite. We'll see how much it helps.

I'll have you know that I've been eating the exact kind every day for months. I feel stronger. My hair has grown back and I'm suddenly able to speak French.

Big difference between PowerBar Harvest & normal PowerBars! I don't care for the regular PowerBar not-so-laffy taffy texture. I find the Harvest bars much closer to granola bars and hella better tasting. Half of one of those before a run & I'm good to go. I especially like the dipped variety. Drink plenty of fluid 'cause they are harder to consume than the average granola bar.
Still, I'd like to explore making my own, too. Something with Kashi Go-Lean Crunch and dried cranberries. Mmmm....
All that said, I've fallen prey to the Runner's World ads and bought a Detour and a U-Turn bar each. Probably will test them out during work break tomorrow -- if palatable I will try them as fuel. :)

Maybe try this if you have the time. It's not as sugary as granola bars and is really good.
Fruit and Spice Granola
4 C. old fashioned rolled oats
1 C. unsweetened desiccated coconut (that's only if you're super health conscious. i use the regural stuff you find at all grocery stores)
1 C. sliced almonds
1 C. sliced pecans
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 stick butter
1/2 cup honey
2 cups of dried fruits
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a large bowl, stir together oats, cocnut, nuts, and spices. In a small saucepan melt butter with honey over low heat, stirring occasionally. Pour butter mixture over oat mixture and toss to combine ingredients very well.
Spread granola evenly in 2 shallow baking pans and bake in upper and lower thirds of oven, stirring frequently and switching position of pans halfway through baking, until golden brown, about 30 minutes. In large bowl combine granola with dried fruits and cool, stirring occassionally. (Granola keeps in an airtight container, chilled, 1 month).
Makes 10 Cups.

i've resigned myself to eating:
-powerbars (peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, or apple cinnamon)
-fi-bars
-nature valley granola or trail mix bars
i'm allergic to soy. EVERY other energy bar out there uses soy as an ingredient... sigh.
