...part of that social contract thing...

Aren't the 'accounts' based on what you and your employers have put in? The more that's gone in, the bigger your benefits, no? The reason for the annual statements that SS sends out is to inform people of the money they've put in and what to expect in the future. Right?

yes, that's quite accurate...but it's not sitting in an envelope in drawer somewhere with JRJO's name on it....it is being used to pay john and jane doe...

so you pull 'your' money out, who pays for john and jane?

Eliminating the cap, yes. Raising the retirement age? No. Last thing we need is 70YO bus drivers, machinists, and medical personnel.

to a certain extent I agree, but it's in the capacity in which a 70 year old can be useful. I wouldn't disinclude medical personnel totally as one of your examples as I think a 70 year old person, of sound mind, can be a catalog of information....if it takes longer to perform a task so be it. I'd rather some of these "older" adults take my order than some young kids. My kids were taught to swim by an 80+ year old woman.

Sorry, but medically speaking I wouldn't want a septuagenarian drawing blood from me, performing surgery on me, or anything else other than give me advice. The body and the mind naturally degenerate, regardless of skill. Quite a different paradigm than swimming lessons.

Yep, I understand that. Just thought I was missing something. And I think that's where taking off the cap comes in. If the 'pulled' portion of my SS payroll deduction gets covered by having a bigger tax base, then everyone can have a portion that's private and still fund the current benefits.

Your choice. One of the trend-setters in the world of surgery is 72 here in my 'lil o town. I'll never go to him, though....as I'm not in need of that type of surgery as I'm already female Mr. Green
