I did this race last year, so I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into. It's a 2.4 mi. run / 12.4 mi. bike / 2.4 mi. run.
The report is short because I didn't do well and I don't want to drag it out. Cliff's notes in bold.
First mile of the first run was pretty much all downhill. Clocked in @ ~5:40. A little fast, but not too bad. During the 2nd mile, both quads started to cramp pretty bad. This happened one other time this year and it wasn't pretty then either. By the end of the first 2.4 mi. run, people was passing me left and right because I was just shuffling. First 2.4 mi. in 15:20 (6:23 pace).
T1 Took just a little over two minutes because my legs were cramped so bad that I had trouble reaching my feet.
The bike was really uneventful. My legs hurt to bad to push it, so I just kinda rode along until T2. 12.4 mi. bike in 36:53 (20.17 MPH pace).
T2 was just a little over a minute since by now I could reach my feet a little better.
Out to do the 2nd run. I did manage to pass a few people, so I felt a little better about that. Remember the first mile of the first run being all downhill? The final mile of the 2nd run was back up that same hill--one tough mile. 2nd 2.4 miles in 16:21 (6:49 pace).
I think I finished in the low-20something position overall out of ~300 people. Final time of 1:11:50, only 3 minutes faster than last year.
I did get to meet Coach Carole from CR. Picture below. (the black stuff on her face was part of her costume. She did the whole race in an orange jumpsuit).
edit :: corrected bike split time which was waaaaay off.

I'm confused on the 3 min. faster/bad race concept too. The cramps sound horrible, and going back up that hill seems cruel. Nice job!!
