Posted: 06/02/09 - 22:16 Post subject: 1st Post, Need some help, few questions.
Im 31 years old and just recently started running last week after a 6 month layoff from any physical exercise. I haven't really ran in years however. I started out with a 1.6 mile run for 4 days (every other day) and then today (my 5th day) did nearly a 3 mile run today (2.8 miles to be exact at 9.08 minute per mile. My question is, even though I never stop, mentally and physically, completing these runs seem much harder that I would have thought. Is it my age finally coming into play or just the fact that I have been inactive. The last time I ran was last year when I was invited to run in a 10k on July 4th. I had never run that far, and though I hadn't been running in years, I had been going to the gym (doing mixed martial arts, ex: muy tai, jiu-jitsu) as well as some swimming. I ran it cold turkey and completed the 10k without stopping in 52 minutes. The next day was brutal to say the least. These 3 miles now feel much worse than I remember that 10k being (maybe it was the adrenaline). I will say that I NEVER breath out of my mouth when running. I breath in and out through the nose only. I did this through the entire 10k as well. The reason I do this is b/c when doing martial arts you are taught not to breathe out of the mouth (its easier to get knocked out if your mouth is open) and also you have a mouthpiece in anyway, so I learned to do all physical exercise through my nose. The great thing about it is your mouth and throat never get dry and you seem to always have energy in reserve. Do you think its to early to draw conclusions about the difficulty of completing my runs after only 5 runs? I sure don't want to believe running at 31 is always going to feel like this!
